Final Update, 1:32 Pm: Fury ended the weekend at $23.7M for Sony and Qed, so it underperformed all the tracking (gee what a surprise), social media metrics, and expectations just a little. But it will likely still make money all in after its domestic, international and home entertainment run. I understand that there were significant profit participations on this one. Fox and Reel FX’s The Book Of Life closed the weekend on the high end of our estimate with $17M and will have some playtime again over the next two weekends as no new offerings are in the family zone until Big Hero 6 bows from Disney on November 7. The other newbie, Relativity’s The Best Of Me, was soft with $10M. Gone Girl is now sitting pretty at $106.7M after three weeks in release for Fox and New Regency

The false note comes with Lerman’s character Norman, and his relationship with Wardaddy. We all know what happens to scared boys in war films, and how their character is going to change. Pitt’s character is keen to get this boy’s cherry popped, in a couple of different ways. But the combination of violent revenge with gallant sensitivity to the female civilians is naive and unconvincing.

In the end it’s a contest for underdog status, and Brad Pitt’s men seem destined for their own self-conscious Alamo or Little Bighorn showdown in the German countryside, even though it’s technically the Germans who are having their General Custer moment. Ayer gives his movie a fervour and energy which takes it beyond a videogame. But only just.

two more distasteful subjects could there be than Nazis and zombies - neither of which could usually be mistaken as the basis for a humorous film. Combine them however (with the addition of the remnants of a Russian army), under the guidance of director Tommy Wirkola, and what you get is Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead (2014). The follow-up to his cult hit Dead Snow (2009) is the ultimate in gross-out horror with heavy helpings of side-splitting humour. Picking up where the original instalment finished, we see Martin (Vegar Hoel), the sole survivor of the zombie massacre, involved in a car crash along with the severed arm of Nazi Colonel Herzog (Ørjan Gamst) lying on the floor beside him.

several days later, Martin is informed by the police that he is suspected of the murder of his friends. Worse comes however when a doctor explains that they've managed to save the arm which they found in his car, and graft it back on his body. As the realisation dawns of the real owner of his new arm, and that the zombie hoards he thought destroyed are but a day's march away, Martin again finds himself in a Nordic nightmare from which he cannot wake. Filmmakers taking on the unpleasant task of fusing Hitler's most despised followers with the resurrected undead, must be brave. As far back as the early 1940s Hollywood was combining both feared elements in films such as John Carradine vehicle Revenge of the Zombies (1943), directed by the Hungarian-born Steve Sekely.

However, though the resultant creatures periodically appeared during the ensuing decades, most films featuring the German undead took a serious approach. Few flavoured the carnage with humour, until Wirkola's headline making hit appeared. Which is what makes his original work, and now its follow-up, work. Everyone knows a good horror film should be like a roller-coaster ride - it may terrify you, but you come out at the end smiling and with an unquenchable desire to experience it all again. Which is exactly what Red vs. Dead does. Though with its fair share of weaknesses - including a human cast with little more life than their zombie counterparts - the film manages to fill the cracks with enough slapstick gore that you will easily forgive such shortcomings. Red vs. Dead's mind numbing bombardment of visceral political incorrectness may have you reeling, but you'll also be left with a ravenous craving for the next 'inevitable' episode.

I do This Rotten Week every Sunday, and most times can’t wait to sink my teeth into what’s about to hit screens. But man, this week took some effort. It wasn’t that the films look all bad (some do), but rather just boring. Four flicks hit the screen, but it looks like there is very little to get too excited for. We’ve got bad days, addictions, bloodsuckers and judges.

Mrs. Rotten Week overcooks my three cheese omelette just a tad on the brown side, and the cup of coffee I poured dribbles a bit over the side of my mug. From there, I realize the temperature control system has my office at 69 degrees instead of 68 (optimal creative setting), and the maid vacuumed the rug against the grain. I think you’re all with me here. Total nightmare. A little different from this flick, but the conceit is the same.

Chicago – The 2014 and 50th Chicago International Film Festival kicks off this week on October 9th, and had a Chicago Red Carpet preview on October 5th with the new film “The Judge,” starring Robert Downey Jr. and directed by David Dobkin.

“The Judge” is a searing family drama, with Downey Jr. as a slick Chicago lawyer who cannot reconcile with his small town Indiana roots and estranged father (Robert Duvall), who presides as a courtroom judge in the town. When the judge himself is accused of a crime, it’s up to his son to attempt a plea. The Red Carpet preview of the film on October 5th celebrates the upcoming 2014 edition of the 50th Chicago International Film Festival, which will open on Thursday, October 9th, with the Liv Ullman directed film, “Miss Julie.”

“The Hero of Color City” would be easy enough for parents (and kids) to doze in and out of if not for the intermittent inclusion of a few grating original songs united only by their inane lyrics and ear-wracking melodies (and mostly warbled by Yellow, with Tara Strong subbing in for Ricci on singing duties). Those tunes and obnoxious minor character Professor Heliotrope (voiced by Guskin and blatantly modeled on “The Simpsons'” Professor Frink, himself inspired by Jerry Lewis in “The Nutty Professor”) are easily the film’s most off-putting elements.

Perez and Ferguson emerge as the relative standouts among a bland vocal cast. The oddly downplayed involvement of Owen Wilson in a minor voiceover role appears to stem from the film’s link to a charitable cause dubbed Crayon Collection, which the actor endorses (in character) in a clumsy PSA tacked onto the end credits.

Watch Bang Bang Full Movie, Review: Siddharth Anand's Bang Bang makes more noise and little sense. This desi adaptation of the 2010 Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz action thriller, Knight And Day, has charm in abundance, primarily because of its effervescent lead pair -- Rajveer/Jai ( Hrithik Roshan) and Harleen (Katrina Kaif). But it lacks coherence. Disbelief is writ large on the face, right at the start.
Picture this - India's most wanted, Omar Zafar (Danny Denzongpa), who is to be extradited to India, escapes from a maximum-security prison in Britain because his aide Hamid Gul (Jaaved Jafferi) blows up the place like it is a cardboard edifice. They also kill the honest ISS agent, Viren Nanda (Jimmy Sheirgill) in the process. Next, Zafar suggests that he can actually hold up the UK-India extradition treaty by getting an Indian to rob the Kohinoor. Really?

Aimed at providing more style than substance, the film makes you comfortably numb in the first 20 minutes itself. So you may perhaps just raise an eyebrow as you watch Katrina, a bank receptionist from Shimla (with a liberal grandmother who tells her to go chase love), on a global escapade -- London, Prague, Greece... in the company of a "psychopathic schizophrenic" jewel thief, Hrithik, after meeting him on one blind date.

If you're still looking to make sense, Hrithik has a back-story on why he attempted to steal the Kohinoor. Or why he chose guns over roses. Kaif, convinced of his good intentions, is happy to cling to him with gay abandon.

Anand's film has no grammar. But it compensates with breathtaking locales and stylishly choreographed stunts. It also works as a show reel for the bronzed Roshan with his six-pack abs and the enviable midriff of Kaif wearing a red polka-dotted bikini top. Their horseplay caters to an audience that is low on IQ and high on adrenalin!

Full marks to the lead pair for not being overwhelmed by the commotion around them. Especially Hrithik, who knows the job at hand is silly, but never slips up.

Anyone who watches trailers online before purchasing movie tickets knows that Hollywood marketing materials are not to be trusted. The only purpose of movie posters, TV spots and trailers is to increase ticket sales, even if that means willfully misrepresenting the content of a particular film. Sample the marketing campaign for Canadian director Philippe Falardeau's The Good Lie and you might identify it as a Reese Witherspoon vehicle in which a beautiful and good-hearted American woman comes to the rescue of helpless Sudanese refugees. That's not exactly the case. The Good Lie wrings a gentle tale from the harshest of sociopolitical circumstances, and it unabashedly targets the broadest audience possible. But it also makes a genuine and convincing case for compassion toward anyone in need of asylum at a time when American politics consistently threaten to derail widely shared values.

  The Good Lie's first act starts in southern Sudan during the 1980s, when civil war resulted in more than 20,000 orphaned and displaced children now known as the "Lost Boys of Sudan." The fictional story tracks a small group of kids who undertake a nearly 1,000-mile walk to the safety of a refugee camp in Kenya after their village is destroyed and their parents lost. The story jumps ahead 13 years as the now grown-up Sudanese led by Mamere (Arnold Oceng) are granted asylum in America. Transplanted to Kansas City, Kansas, their lives become enmeshed with those of Carrie (Witherspoon) and Jack (Corey Stoll), who initially were hired to find jobs for the Sudanese. The struggle of the transplanted Sudanese is not only one of adapting to a strange world, but also reuniting with family forcibly separated from them along the way.

  Director Falardeau witnessed the horrors of the Second Sudanese Civil War firsthand when he was cinematographer on a documentary about the resulting humanitarian crisis. He sidesteps the white savior pitfall by casting Sudanese actors — many of whom were child refugees or descendants of refugees — in major roles and giving them room to tell their story in a dignified way. The screenplay by Margaret Nagle (HBO's Boardwalk Empire) balances pathos with humor, and makes sure the American characters arrive at some kind of enlightenment. It's not often that an essentially feel-good story is the best way to approach subject matter of this kind, but it's hard to argue with The Good Lie's sincerity and understated message.
